Himachal Monsoon Update: 24% Rainfall Deficit Recorded, Yellow Alert Issued for September 3
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for various regions in Himachal Pradesh, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning on September 3. However, despite the recent weather warnings, the state has experienced a significant 24% decrease in rainfall during this monsoon season, which spans from June 1 to September 1.
As per the latest reports, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh on September 3. This comes after the state has already witnessed a substantial reduction in monsoon rains. From June 1 to September 1, the region recorded 24% less rainfall compared to the average. Despite this shortfall, the intense rain that did occur led to severe damage across the state, claiming 151 lives due to rain-related incidents such as cloudbursts.
Rainfall across the state’s 12 districts has been below average, with only Shimla seeing a 10% increase compared to its usual rainfall levels. This year’s monsoon has brought 471.1 mm of rain, while the state’s average is typically 618.9 mm. Lahaul-Spiti district faced the most significant shortfall, with a staggering 73% less rain. Kinnaur followed with a 43% deficit, while Chamba and Una each saw a 34% drop. Other districts like Hamirpur, Solan, Kullu, Sirmaur, Mandi, Bilaspur, and Kangra also recorded notable decreases.
Since the monsoon began on June 27, the state has faced a series of challenges. As of August 31, 151 people have lost their lives in incidents related to the heavy rains, and the state has suffered financial losses totaling ₹1,265 crore. The weather, however, has been relatively dry since the evening of last Saturday, with only sporadic showers in some areas.
Nahan received the highest rainfall on August 31, with 20 mm recorded, followed by Mandi with 15 mm, Dharamshala with 5 mm, and Dalhousie with 4 mm. Light traces of rain were noted in Neri and Kufri. Looking ahead, the local Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for September 3, cautioning residents about the potential for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
Temperature-wise, the state saw contrasting extremes on August 31. Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti was the coldest spot with a minimum temperature of 11.9°C, while Una was the hottest, hitting a maximum of 36°C.
As Himachal Pradesh continues to navigate through this challenging monsoon season, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions, especially with the yellow alert in effect for September 3.
