Himachal Introduces QR Code System to Make Liquor Sales Transparent

The Himachal Pradesh government has rolled out a new QR code-based tracking system for liquor bottles, aiming to curb overpricing and stop the circulation of illicit stock. Under the new excise policy, all liquor bottled and packaged after March 31 must carry a QR code, while older stock will be phased out gradually.

The move comes after repeated complaints of vendors tampering with printed Maximum Retail Price (MRP) labels and overcharging customers. With the new system, consumers can simply scan the QR code on a bottle using their mobile phones to instantly access details such as MRP, manufacturing date, batch number, manufacturer’s name, validity, and licensing information.

Officials have clarified that the price shown through the QR code will be treated as final. If vendors charge more, consumers can lodge complaints with digital proof, making enforcement stronger and more transparent.

Inspection teams will also use the QR codes during routine checks to verify stock and pricing, ensuring quicker action against violations. The system will maintain a digital record of each bottle, helping authorities track suspicious batches and identify counterfeit liquor.

Manufacturers are expected to benefit too, as they can update prices digitally without constantly changing printed labels, reducing costs and simplifying operations.

The government believes this initiative will bring transparency to liquor sales, protect consumers from unfair pricing, and tighten regulatory control over the trade in Himachal Pradesh.
