Himachal  Braces for Snow and Rain as Yellow Alert Issued for January 11-12

The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for Himachal Pradesh, forecasting significant weather changes between January 11 and 12, 2025.

A Western Disturbance, combined with a Subtropical Westerly Jet Stream generating winds of up to 135 knots, is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall in the low hills and plains starting January 11 afternoon. Meanwhile, tourist hotspots in the mid and high hills, including Shimla, are likely to experience moderate snowfall from the evening of January 11 through the morning of January 13.

Temperature Swings and Safety Warnings
The region will see fluctuating temperatures, with minimum temperatures rising by 2-3°C and maximum temperatures dropping by 4-5°C, creating cold day conditions in certain areas. Dense fog and ground frost, particularly in districts like Bilaspur and Mandi, are expected to subside after January 11.

The IMD has cautioned against potential travel disruptions, slippery roads, and reduced visibility. Residents and tourists are advised to dress warmly, limit outdoor activities, and heed travel advisories. Drivers should stay vigilant, use fog lights, and prepare for possible hazards on the roads.

Current Weather Highlights
The state experienced dry weather over the past 24 hours. Kukumseri recorded the lowest temperature at a chilling -11.3°C, while Una registered the highest at 23.0°C. Despite the dry spell, a severe cold wave gripped Una, with dense fog and ground frost affecting some regions.
