Himachal assembly to hold 10-day monsoon session from August 27

The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, made a historic decision on Thursday. They recommended that the Governor convene the Monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha from August 27th to September 9th, 2024, in Shimla. This session will consist of ten sittings, marking the first time a Monsoon Session lasts for such an extended period.

Anticipating stormy debates, it’s worth noting that during the Budget session, the state assembly adjourned a day early due to cross-voting by six Congress MLAs in the Rajya Sabha election. These same MLAs abstained from the assembly on the final day.

Exciting changes are on the horizon! In the recent by-election, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife, Kamlesh Thakur, and two other women legislators will join the assembly for the first time. Previously, there was only one woman legislator in the 14th assembly, but now that number has increased to three.

In the 68-member house, Congress will maintain its 40 members (similar to the previous tally), while the BJP’s strength has grown from 25 to 28 after winning three by-elections.

Stay tuned—the Governor is likely to give assent to this significant session soon
