From Mud Huts to Apna Ghar: How a Government Scheme is Rebuilding Dreams in Jogindernagar
For Ran Singh of Haragunain village, the monsoon rains no longer bring fear of his walls crumbling. For Sukhdev of Arthi, the mud floor his children once slept on has been replaced by solid cement. And for 112 other families across the Jogindernagar area, the word “home” has finally stopped being a distant dream.
The Himachal Pradesh government’s Golden Jubilee Shelter Scheme has turned these dreams into reality, one house at a time. Between 2023 and 2026, 114 eligible families in this region have received ₹1.5 lakh each to build permanent homes—a lifeline that has pulled them out of makeshift shelters and into spaces of safety and dignity.
A Roof That Doesn’t Leak
Ran Singh still remembers the nights when his family huddled together in their mud house, praying the walls would hold through another storm. “We couldn’t afford to even think about building a pucca house,” he says, his voice carrying the weight of years of struggle. “This scheme didn’t just give us money—it gave us peace of mind.” Today, his family sleeps soundly under a concrete roof, a luxury they never thought they’d know.
For Sukhdev, who lives in Arthi village, the transformation is equally profound. His family’s mud dwelling was not just uncomfortable—it was a constant reminder of their financial limits. “The government understood what we needed most,” he says, crediting Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for his administration’s sensitivity. “Now my children have a proper space to study, to grow.”
More Than Just Bricks and Cement
The scheme’s impact goes far beyond construction materials. Among the 114 beneficiaries, 109 are from Scheduled Castes, 3 from Other Backward Classes, and 2 from Scheduled Tribes—communities that have historically been left behind in the race for development.
According to the Tehsil Kalyan Officer, Joginder Nagar, each of these families received the full financial assistance in three installments, ensuring the money was used effectively to complete their homes.
A Government That Listens
The beneficiaries’ gratitude isn’t just polite formality—it’s the kind of raw emotion that comes when a government promise actually changes a life. “I never imagined I’d see this day,” Ran Singh admits. “When you live in a mud house, you start believing that’s all life has in store for you. This scheme gave us back our hope.”
The Golden Jubilee Shelter Scheme represents something bigger than housing policy. It’s a statement that development isn’t complete until it reaches the last person in line—that dignity isn’t reserved for the wealthy, and that a “sensitive governance system” can indeed translate into tangible change.
As these 114 families settle into their new homes, the government has made it clear: this is just the beginning. No eligible family, they say, will be left without a roof over their heads.
