Delhi’s Tulip Dreams Get a Boost as CSIR-IHBT and NDMC Join Hands
In a significant step towards beautifying the national capital with vibrant tulip displays, CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the multiplication and cultivation of tulips in New Delhi.
The agreement, signed on October 7, 2026, by CSIR-IHBT Director Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav and NDMC Director (Horticulture) Jitender Singh Dabas, aims to combine scientific expertise with urban horticulture initiatives to promote large-scale tulip cultivation.
Under the partnership, tulip bulbs provided by NDMC will be scientifically multiplied and propagated at CSIR-IHBT. The enhanced planting material will then be supplied back to NDMC for cultivation and display across suitable locations in New Delhi, helping create more colourful and attractive public spaces.
Over the years, CSIR-IHBT has developed considerable expertise in tulip cultivation, bulb multiplication, and production technologies suited to different agro-climatic conditions. The institute is particularly known for producing high-quality tulip planting material under Himalayan conditions. By leveraging this knowledge and NDMC’s horticultural infrastructure, the collaboration is expected to strengthen the availability of quality planting stock and support the expansion of tulip gardens in the capital.
The initiative also highlights the growing role of scientific research in urban landscaping and sustainable floriculture. Officials believe the partnership will not only enhance New Delhi’s floral beauty but also encourage wider adoption of tulip cultivation through institutional cooperation.
The MoU reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to promoting ornamental horticulture and creating greener, more visually appealing urban environments through innovation and scientific collaboration.
