Death due to Monkey menace: Himachal High Court takes suo- moto cognizance 

Himachal Pradesh High Court has taken cognizance of the death of a young woman in the town who died recently after being scared by a Monkey, the court listed the matter for seeking a reply from the state and central authorities.

 A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan and Justice Virender Singh on Monday issued notices to the authority to clarify the incident and inform the court about steps taken to curb the monkey menace.

The bench decided to take suo moto cognizance on the matter on the basis of the news report published in a Hindi daily. The report says that a young woman fell from the third story of a house at Dhanda outskirt of Shimla recently as she was scared of a monkey. The victim was rushed to the IGMC Hospital where she succumbed to injuries. The victim took the extreme step after her mother was also attacked by the same monkey.

The court made the Union Minister of Environment, Forest’s main party in the matter but also issued notices to the State Secretary Forest of Himachal, Deputy Commissioner, Municipal Commissioner, Shimla, and DFO to inform the court about measures taken to curb the monkey menace.

The Court has also interacted with wildlife wing officers on the matter and fixed  May 15 next date of hearing in the matter.
