Congress snatches Shimla Municipal Corporation from BJP 

 Congress party snatched Shimla Municipal Corporation from BJP after winning 24 seats in 34 wards corporation at the end of counting today.

After a gap of ten years, the Congress party got a landslide victory in the Shimla MC poll as the party got 24 seats. This victory is another breakthrough for the grand old party in the state capital town as it had also grabbed the power from BJP in Assembly Elections recently. 

Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu addressing a press conference after the results here today said that it is the biggest victory for the party as no party secured such an outstanding and landslides majority getting two-thirds of seats in the oldest Municipality of the country

The BJP could win nine seats and CPI(M) one in this election.  In the 2017 Shimla MC poll BJP had won 18 seats, Congress 12 and CPI (M) two and Independent two. 

Former mayor of BJP Satya Kandol lost Election from Sanjouli Chowk as Congress candidates Mamta Chandel won by a margin of 196 from her.

Congress was facing defeat in the Shimla MC poll as in 2012 CPI(M) and 2017 BJP won this election.

Out of a total of five municipal corporations in the state, Congress grabbed the third MC as the party has local city governments in Solan and Palampur moreover in a bye-election of Palampur MC Congress party has also won one ward the election today.

Shimla MC Election was scheduled to be held in June 2022 but it was postponed by the previous BJP government now Congress has wrestled the capital town MC BJP. 

 BJP has remained confined to  Mandi and Dharmshala MC  in two civic bodies of Himachal now.

Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that the selection of a new mayor and Deputy Mayor is to be made by party president Pratibha Singh and him with the consultation of winning councilors soon. Both the leader would deliberate on the new mayor soon and Shimla MC which is without any elected government would not have to wait long.

” Shimla MC is the oldest Municipality in the country would affect the other Assembly Election including Karnataka ad party victory from Shimla would give a resounding message to voters of the entire country,” Mr Sukhu said in a reply to a query about the impact of Shimla MC poll.

He said that the people of state capital reposed confidence in Congress after five months as it is another victory also won recently Assembly Election.

He said National BJP president J P Nadda belongs to Himachal if it lost Election in his capital home state it would definitely be a big setback to the Narendra Modi government and the ruling BJP in the center.

BJP tried to seek votes on the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Shimla MC poll and involved union minister Anurag Thakur in the Election campaign BJP had to change state president in the mid of the Shimla MC poll, Mr Sukh said adding that Congress victory in Shimla MC poll is historic as no other party obtained such thumping majority.
