CITU holds silent protest outside IGMC Shimla against Kolkata incident
In response to the brutal murder and rape of an on-duty trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, and in support of the demands of doctors and medical staff, the CITU State Committee of Himachal Pradesh held a powerful silent protest at the IGMC Shimla campus. The protest saw participation from hundreds of people, including Vijendra Mehra, Jagat Ram, Balak Ram, Ramakant Mishra, Ranveer Kuthiala, and Vivek Kashyap.
The State Committee demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators and called for solid laws to ensure the safety of doctors and medical personnel. They urged immediate justice for the victim resident doctor and her family and emphasized the need to secure women’s safety at workplaces.
CITU State President Vijendra Mehra and other leaders highlighted that forcing doctors to work 36-hour shifts violates international standards and that the lack of adequate facilities at workplaces is against human values. Due to government apathy, no concrete laws have been established for medical staff, leaving them to work under unsafe conditions.
The public outrage and the strike by doctors following the Kolkata incident have sparked hopes for justice.
