By getting geo tag, Kinnauri apple got a distinct identity at the international level : Dr. Satish Sharma

The Geographical Indication (GEO) tag for Kinnaur’s world-famous Kinnauri apples has given not only Kinnauri apples but the entire region of Kinnaur a distinct international identity, bringing the state a global reputation. This achievement is considered a significant milestone for the district’s apple growers and horticulture sector.
Sharing information, Dr. Satish Sharma, Director of Horticulture, Himachal Pradesh, said that Kinnaur apples are world-renowned for their taste, quality, and nutritional value. He explained that the Himachal Pradesh Patent Information Center, the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (HIMCOST), and the Deputy Director, Horticulture Office, Kinnaur, played a key role in this registration process.
Dr. Satish Sharma informed that the Geographical Indication (GI Tag) of Kinnauri Apple has been registered in the name of Som Prakash, CO of Kinnaur Kailash Agro Fresh Producer Company Limited, Reckongpeo, District Kinnaur under GI No. 1074 in Class-31 (Apple) with effect from April 12, 2023.
He stated that obtaining a Geographical Indication (GI) registration will provide legal protection for the unique identity of Kinnauri apples. This will ensure their authenticity in the market, help curb counterfeit products, and increase the chances of farmers and orchardists receiving better prices. Furthermore, the distinct identity of Kinnauri apples will be further strengthened at the national and international levels.
People associated with the horticulture sector called it a matter of pride for the apple growers of Kinnaur and said that this achievement will prove helpful in giving a new identity to the rich horticulture tradition and high quality apples of the district.
