Bhupendra Gupta Steps Up as Interim Leader at SJVNL

In a significant leadership update for India’s power sector, Bhupendra Gupta, currently the Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited, has been appointed as the interim Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL). This appointment, effective from May 1, 2025, was officially confirmed by an order from the Ministry of Power on May 2, 2025. Gupta will serve in this role for three months or until a permanent CMD is selected, whichever comes first.

This interim assignment, pending final approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), comes at a crucial time for SJVNL. The company, a major player in the public sector hydropower and renewable energy space, is headquartered in Shimla and is actively involved in significant hydro and solar power projects both in India and internationally. These initiatives are key to advancing India’s clean energy transition goals.

The Ministry’s notification, signed by Director Santosh Kumar, has been distributed to senior stakeholders, including the CMD of NHPC Ltd., SJVNL board members, the Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh, and senior officials across various government departments.

Industry experts view Gupta’s temporary promotion as a strategic move to maintain the company’s momentum. With his extensive experience in technical leadership at THDCIL, Gupta is expected to continue driving SJVNL’s growth, particularly in its expanding hydro, solar, and wind energy sectors.
