Awareness camps will be organised at the village level to give impetus to the drug-free Himachal campaign
An important meeting was held on Saturday in the Shimla Rural Sub-Division to further enhance the effectiveness of the state government’s campaign against drug abuse and drug-free Himachal. The meeting was chaired by Shimla Rural SDM Manjeet Sharma. All the numberdars in the sub-division, officials from various departments, and police station in-charges participated in the meeting and discussed collective efforts to eradicate drug abuse.
SDM Manjeet Sharma said that the growing trend of drug addiction is posing a serious challenge to society, especially the future of youth. To effectively address this problem, the participation of the administration, police, Panchayat representatives, social organizations, and the general public is essential. He added that merely enforcing laws against drug addiction is not enough; it is equally important to create widespread public awareness.
He informed that special awareness meetings will be held at the cluster level in various areas of the Shimla Rural Subdivision. These meetings will include public representatives from the respective panchayats, women’s groups, self-help groups, youth groups, Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and local citizens.
The SDM urged the numberdars to keep a close watch on drug-related activities in their areas and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the administration or police. Police officers also informed about special campaigns being launched to curb the drug trade and assured that strict action against drug traffickers would continue.
Numberdar Ramakrishna Rana said that the numberdars in Junga tehsil have launched a special awareness campaign to make Himachal free of drugs, and people are being made aware of the ill effects of drugs in shops, dhabas, and on special occasions. He added that no cases of drug abuse like “chita” have yet been reported in the rural areas of Junga tehsil.
