An Early Winter’s Grasp: Key Mountain Highway Closes for Safety

A critical high-altitude highway has been closed for the season, much earlier than usual, as winter’s fierce grip tightens over the Himalayas. The Manali-Leh road, a vital artery through the trans-Himalayan region, is now shut beyond Darcha due to severe cold and treacherous, invisible layers of black ice that have made travel unsafe.

The decision, following assessments by road crews and local authorities, marks the beginning of the area’s annual winter isolation. While limited travel was permitted on higher sections until recently, rapidly deteriorating conditions left no choice. “The decision prioritises public safety,” explained Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana. The road is not expected to reopen until May or June of next year, once the snow clears.

With the Gramphoo-Losar route also closed, winter connectivity across the remote, soaring landscapes has been suspended. The region now settles into its quiet, frozen phase.

The early closure underscores an intense cold wave gripping Himachal Pradesh, where temperatures are plummeting. Residents are bundling up in heavy woollens, and authorities are advising people to stay indoors during foggy late evenings and nights, especially near river basins.

As the high passes seal under snow and ice, the mountains wait in stillness for the return of the sun and the thaw that will once again open the way for travelers.
