A Tragic Loss in Dharamshala: Student’s Death Sparks Calls for Justice

A 19-year-old college student in Dharamshala has died after allegedly enduring ragging, physical assault, intimidation, and sexual harassment on her campus. The shocking case has led police to book a professor and three female students, raising urgent questions about safety in educational institutions.

The Allegations

According to the complaint filed by the victim’s father, his daughter was repeatedly harassed—physically assaulted and intimidated by three students, while a professor allegedly subjected her to obscene acts. He said the relentless abuse left her terrified and mentally disturbed, ultimately causing her health to deteriorate.

The Final Days

The young student was first treated in hospitals in Himachal Pradesh before being referred to Ludhiana. Despite medical efforts, she passed away on December 26, 2025. Her father explained that the family’s delay in approaching police was due to her prolonged illness and the deep shock they suffered after her death.

The Investigation

Police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009. Officials confirmed that the inquiry will examine allegations of ragging, assault, intimidation, and sexual misconduct, as well as the chain of events that led to her declining health.

Conflicting Narratives

The college administration has presented a different account. They claim the student had failed her examinations and was seeking admission to the second year, which was not allowed under university rules. According to them, she was under depression due to academic struggles. The college also stated that no formal complaint of ragging or harassment was ever received, and alleged that the student’s family had threatened teachers.

Public Outcry

The incident has sparked outrage. Senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur condemned the case as “shameful” and demanded a high-level, impartial inquiry to ensure justice for the victim.
