A New Era for HPU: Dr. Mahavir Singh Takes Helm as Vice-Chancellor After 3-Year Wait
After a three-year leadership gap, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in Shimla has finally welcomed its new Vice-Chancellor—renowned physicist Dr. Mahavir Singh, popularly known in academic circles as Dr. M.V. Sharma. The appointment, officially approved by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla (who serves as the university’s Chancellor), marks a fresh start for the institution.
A Much-Needed Appointment
The Vice-Chancellor’s position had been vacant since April 2022, when former VC Prof. Sikandar Kumar stepped down after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. Since then, Dr. Sat Prakash Bansal, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, had been managing the role temporarily. The selection process faced delays due to legal challenges, but with the High Court’s clearance and a selection committee’s recommendation, Dr. Singh’s appointment brings long-awaited stability.
A Stellar Academic Legacy
Dr. Singh is no stranger to HPU—he’s a distinguished alumnus and veteran researcher from the university’s Department of Physics. His expertise in nano-particle science has earned him national acclaim, particularly for his work on ultra-sensitive radar systems for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). His collaborations extend globally, including partnerships with leading research institutions in Germany on cutting-edge nano-technology projects.
Beyond his research, Dr. Singh holds multiple patents, has guided numerous PhD scholars, and previously elevated research standards during his tenure at Baddi University. Most recently, he played a pivotal role in securing approval for HPU’s state-of-the-art Radioactive Laboratory—a major boost for scientific research in Himachal Pradesh.
