Realism in literature ought to be written with new sensitivity: Geetanjali Shree
The realism in Indian Literature ought to be written with more sensitivity and depth as expression of realism in the literature should not be a straight truth but it lies in many layers in contemporary literature. This was stated by the Geetanjali Shree, Booker prize winner for her Novel ‘Tomb of sand’ she was participating in ‘discussion on Women writings in Indian Languages during the International Literature festival ‘Unmesh’ at Viceroy auditorium at historic Gaiety theatre at Shimla on Saturday. She said that writers like Munshi Prem Chand in very hard times took bold steps to adopt the writings of social realism however in the contemporary era there is no bar to writing on social realism. The borders of the past are not broken and many new borders have come forth; however writers should now focus on the untouched facets which are so far not given too much attention. She said that women writers are no different from the men as she did not feel any special distinction as gender basis. Criticising the gender basis in the literature, Geetanjlee Shree said that those who are merely accused for not writing about women in their writings being a woman are not getting justice as writers. She said that in literature there are no categories as men-writers as writers always happen to be a person. She did not consider the writers who only write about women’s inferior but it is their choice as they thought to write about a kind of human beings.” I have regards for Pushpa Matri who prides herself as a woman writer, she is big writer in fact but Krishana Sobati and Maridula Garg considers them just a writer and not keep them in any camp thus I have chosen to be only writer did not like to keep me as women-writer . ” The booker winner said. The selection of writings is a matter of choice and sensitivity. Everybody is different, some select to write about women and others about human beings as matter of their sensitivity. Terming the booker award conferred on her as source of recognition to the writer, She said that luckily her book was got booker prize but the prize is merely a torch lights which have fallen on her works which like any other works growing on the fertile grounds but fortunately there are others who are also working on on the equally feat but it is not the torch which people see but land on which its light falls. She considers each work of literature as a form of Art since there are other forms of arts which also engage and communicate with each other. She said that every form of art has its own horizons similarly literature also has its horizons but each art is intermingled with other forms. She said that words in literature have limitations which ultimately lead writers to excellence if one chooses the right collections of words.
