From Chamba’s Hills to Asian Games Glory: Seema Kumari Scripts History for Himachal
Chamba’s remote Reta village has given Himachal Pradesh a new sporting icon. Distance runner Seema Kumari created history at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000m race, becoming only the third Indian woman to reach the podium in the event and ending the country’s 16-year wait for a medal.
The 25-year-old athlete clocked 32:50.05 to finish third in a highly competitive final. Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi secured gold with a time of 32:39.18, while Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka claimed silver in 32:41.54. Seema displayed remarkable grit throughout the race, staying among the leading pack before producing a determined finish to hold off challengers and seal a historic bronze.
Her achievement is particularly significant for Indian athletics. The last time India won medals in the women’s 10,000m at the Asian Games was in 2010, when Preeja Sreedharan won gold and Kavita Raut secured silver. Seema’s podium finish has now revived India’s presence in the event after a gap of 16 years.
A Journey Born Out of Struggle
Behind the medal lies an inspiring story of resilience and determination. Born on January 10, 2001, in Reta village of Chamba district, Seema’s journey was far from easy. She lost her father at the age of 12, leaving the family dependent on farming and cattle rearing for their livelihood.
In her early years, Seema often trained without proper running shoes. Her natural talent, however, quickly became evident through school competitions, helping her rise through district and state-level tournaments. The turning point came in 2015 when she earned admission to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Dharamsala, where access to structured coaching and better facilities transformed her athletic career.
That same year, she announced her arrival on the national stage by winning gold at the Junior National Athletics Championships in Ranchi.
Rising Through the Ranks
Over the next few years, Seema steadily built her reputation as one of India’s most promising distance runners. She set junior national records in the 2,000m and 3,000m events, won multiple national titles, and became part of the Khelo India programme in 2018.
Her determination was tested again when she qualified for the Asian Youth Championships in Bangkok. With limited financial resources, her mother reportedly broke a fixed deposit to fund her participation. Seema repaid that sacrifice by returning home with a bronze medal. She later added a silver medal at the 2018 Youth Asian Olympics Qualifying Games, further strengthening her international credentials.
A Breakthrough Season
The 2026 season has been the most successful of Seema’s career so far. Earlier this year, she won the women’s 10,000m title at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships and recorded personal bests in both major events.
At The TEN meet in California in March, she clocked 32:02.43 in the 10,000m, while in April she achieved a personal best of 15:16.20 in the 5,000m. These performances underlined her growing stature in international distance running.
Her rise, however, began gathering pace even before 2026. In 2024, she won gold at the Asian Cross Country Championships, and in 2025 she secured a silver medal in the 5,000m event at the World University Games. The Asian Games bronze is now the crowning achievement of an already remarkable season.
Inspiring a Generation
Seema’s success has brought immense pride to Himachal Pradesh, particularly to the people of Chamba, where celebrations erupted following her historic achievement. Her story resonates far beyond athletics because it reflects the determination of countless young athletes from rural India who pursue big dreams despite limited resources.
From running on village trails without proper equipment to standing on the Asian Games podium, Seema has become a symbol of perseverance and hope.
Yet, for the Chamba athlete, the journey is far from over. Following her bronze-medal-winning performance, Seema made it clear that her sights are now set on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“The Asian Games medal is not the finish line. I want to work even harder and win an Olympic medal for India,” she said.
As Himachal Pradesh celebrates one of its finest sporting achievements, Seema Kumari’s remarkable rise serves as a reminder that talent, determination and courage can overcome even the toughest circumstances.
