A Fond Farewell to Shimla’s Beloved Coffee Man: Bhagirath Thakur Retires After 42 Years

For over four decades, the rich aroma of coffee at Shimla’s historic Indian Coffee House has been warmed by the presence of one man: Bhagirath Thakur. Known affectionately as “Barbas Bhagirath” by locals and visitors alike, he has become as much a part of the Mall Road landmark as the coffee itself. As he retired on the 31st December, an era of heartfelt service will come to a close.

Since starting his journey here in 1984, Bhagirath has been more than a server—he has been a familiar face, a gentle host, and a keeper of memories. His humble and sincere nature has made every cup of coffee feel personal, whether served to a first-time tourist, a daily regular, or some of the nation’s most prominent figures.

Over the years, his hands have poured coffee for personalities ranging from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani to Himachal’s political stalwarts like Dr. Y.S. Parmar, Virbhadra Singh, and current Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Even actor Anupam Kher has shared a warm conversation over a cup prepared by Bhagirath.

Born in 1968 into a modest family in Solan district’s Badog village, Bhagirath began working at the coffee house during challenging times. By 1986, he became a permanent employee—and for 42 years, his dedication never wavered. His neat appearance, consistent warmth, and genuine care for everyone who walked in made him the heart of this beloved institution.

As the Indian Coffee House prepares to honor his remarkable service, regulars and newcomers alike are savoring their final chances to enjoy his specially made coffee and share a moment with the man who served not just with his hands, but with his heart.

For anyone visiting Shimla, a trip to the Indian Coffee House on Mall Road is more than just about coffee—it’s a chance to be part of a living legacy, one that Bhagirath Thakur has lovingly poured into every cup.
