From Shimla Classrooms to the Delhi High Court: Justice Dinesh Bhatt’s Inspiring Journey
For many in Himachal Pradesh, the appointment of Dinesh Bhatt as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court is a moment of pride and inspiration. A son of Shimla who began his journey in the hill town’s classrooms and courtrooms, Bhatt has now reached one of the country’s most prestigious judicial institutions.
The 57-year-old judicial officer took oath as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on Tuesday following his appointment by the President of India, marking a significant milestone in a legal career built on dedication, hard work, and public service.
Born and raised in Shimla, Bhatt completed his schooling at the renowned St. Edward’s School before pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Sanjauli College. Driven by an interest in law and justice, he went on to earn his LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University in 1993.
After completing his legal education, Bhatt began practising at the Himachal Pradesh High Court in Shimla. Those early years helped shape his understanding of the legal system and laid the foundation for a distinguished judicial career that would later take him to the national capital.
A major turning point came in 2008 when he appeared for the Delhi Higher Judicial Service examination. Demonstrating exceptional merit, he secured the first rank and was inducted as an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Delhi.
Over the next 16 years, Bhatt built an impressive judicial record, serving in several courts across Delhi and handling a wide range of legal matters. His consistent performance and administrative capabilities saw him rise through the ranks, serving as District and Sessions Judge before eventually becoming a Principal District and Sessions Judge.
However, Bhatt’s story extends beyond the courtroom. During his years in Shimla as a student and legal practitioner, he remained actively involved in social service initiatives. He participated in tree plantation campaigns and worked to support differently-abled individuals, underprivileged women, senior citizens, and economically weaker patients in need of assistance.
His appointment to the Delhi High Court is being viewed not only as a personal achievement but also as a proud moment for Himachal Pradesh. It reflects the contribution of the state’s educational institutions and legal community in nurturing talent that goes on to serve the nation at the highest levels.
