Monsoon Tightens Grip on Himachal: 103 Roads Blocked, Orange Alert Issued in Several Districts
The monsoon continues to test Himachal Pradesh, bringing fresh challenges for residents as heavy rains disrupt daily life across many parts of the state. With landslides, damaged infrastructure, and road closures mounting, authorities have urged people to remain cautious as more rain is expected in the coming days.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 103 roads were blocked across Himachal Pradesh as of Saturday evening due to landslides and other rain-related incidents. The impact has also been felt on essential services, with 221 water supply schemes disrupted across the state. Kullu and Mandi remain among the worst-affected districts, reporting the highest number of road blockages.
Adding to the concern, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has forecast another spell of rain across many parts of the state until August 21.
Orange Alert for Heavy Rain
The weather department has issued an Orange Alert for August 17 in the districts of Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
For August 18, the Orange Alert has been extended to Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur, and Una. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for most other districts, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
Weather officials expect light to moderate rain over large parts of the state, with some areas likely to witness intense downpours that could trigger landslides, flash floods, and traffic disruptions.
Rising Human and Financial Cost
The prolonged monsoon season has left a deep mark on Himachal Pradesh this year. Official data shows that between June 30 and August 14, 183 people lost their lives in rain-related disasters, while 291 others were injured.
The damage to homes and public infrastructure has also been extensive. The monsoon has completely destroyed 31 pucca houses and 52 kutcha houses, while 303 more homes have suffered partial damage. Besides residential properties, 14 shops and 260 cattle sheds have been affected, and 225 livestock animals have died during the season.
The financial toll continues to rise, with the estimated loss due to monsoon-related disasters touching ₹972.64 crore.
More Rain Ahead
Relief appears unlikely in the immediate future. The weather office has predicted continued rainfall across many regions of Himachal Pradesh through August 21. While widespread light to moderate showers are expected, isolated locations may receive heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of landslides and road blockages.
The rains are also expected to bring a slight drop in temperatures, with maximum temperatures likely to fall by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in several areas over the next few days.
As Himachal navigates another challenging phase of the monsoon, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents, especially those living in vulnerable areas, to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
