After Years of Silence, Shipki La Trade Route Set to Come Alive Again from 1st June 2026

There is a renewed sense of excitement in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district as preparations pick up pace to reopen the historic India–China trade route through Shipki La pass. After receiving political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs, local authorities are now fully geared up to restart border trade from June 1, 2026—bringing hope of economic revival to the region.

For many in the border communities, this isn’t just about trade—it’s about reconnecting with a tradition that once sustained livelihoods. “Around 55 traders have already applied to participate this season,” shared Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma. Their applications are currently under security review, after which they will be granted travel and trade permits.

To ensure traders feel confident and well-prepared, the administration plans to host a special workshop in early June. Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Customs Department, and DGFT, the session will guide participants through the rules, processes, and opportunities involved in cross-border trade. Whether online or offline, the aim is clear: make sure no trader feels lost navigating the system.

The revived trade will see a carefully curated exchange of goods. From across the border, traders will bring in traditional and raw materials like wool, yak hair, salt, silk, carpets, and local herbal medicines—items deeply rooted in the region’s cultural and economic fabric.

In return, Indian traders will export a wide range of products—from essentials like grains, tea, and vegetables to everyday goods such as clothing, utensils, bicycles, and even prayer items like incense and butter lamps. This diverse list reflects both modern demand and longstanding cultural exchanges.

Beyond the numbers and logistics, the reopening of Shipki La signals something more human—it reconnects communities, revives local markets, and rekindles a shared history of exchange across the mountains. For the people of Kinnaur, June 1 is not just a date; it marks the return of opportunity, movement, and hope.
