Shimla Citizens Vow to Keep Up the Fight for a Safer City
The voices of concerned citizens are growing louder. In a recent meeting held in Shimla, the members of the Shimla Nagrik Sabha came together with a clear and determined message: their campaign for a permanent solution to the city’s monkey and dog menace will not slow down.
This renewed push comes just days after the Sabha’s demonstration on the 17th outside the Municipal Corporation office, where they called for stricter laws to manage the stray dog population.
The committee has decided on a ward-by-ward approach to ensure their concerns are heard. They plan to personally submit memorandums to every local councillor, pressing them to officially raise these critical issues in the upcoming monthly corporation meetings.
So, what exactly are the citizens asking for? Their demands are practical and focused on safety and compassion:
· A large-scale sterilization drive to humanely control the population of monkeys and dogs.
· The construction of dedicated dog shelters and pounds in every zone of the city.
· Designated feeding zones in each ward to keep public spaces clean.
· A fair compensation policy for individuals who suffer from monkey or dog bites.
· Community initiatives to encourage the adoption of stray dogs.
· The launch of a 24/7 helpline and an efficient reporting system for immediate action.
To build momentum, the Nagrik Sabha will be taking their discussion to every neighbourhood, holding local meetings to unite residents. In a significant move, they have also announced another peaceful demonstration scheduled for September 29th, coinciding with the proposed monthly Municipal Corporation meeting, to ensure their demands are front and centre.
The meeting saw strong participation from prominent community members reflecting a united front in this civic cause.
