Lieutenant General Sushil Chander, a native of Katrain village in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, has brought pride to the state after taking charge as Director General of Integrated Training (DGIT) in the Indian Army.
Lt Gen Chander assumed his new responsibilities at the Ministry of Defence (Army) headquarters in New Delhi on November 1.
His elevation marks a significant milestone for Himachal Pradesh, particularly Kullu district and his native Katrain village. He is also the first alumnus of Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra to attain the rank of Lieutenant General.
With more than three-and-a-half decades of military service, Lt Gen Chander brings extensive experience in logistics, strategic planning, administration and operational preparedness to his new role.
His journey began in Himachal Pradesh, where he studied at Government High School, Katrain, and later at Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra. He joined the National Defence Academy in January 1988 and was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy in December 1991. He also attended the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and the National Defence College in New Delhi.
Over the years, Lt Gen Chander has served in several key command and staff positions. These include Commanding Officer of 11 Field Ordnance Depot, Brigadier Ordnance of a Strike Corps, and Major General of Ordnance Services of a strategically important Army Command responsible for the northern frontier with China.
As DGIT, he will oversee important aspects of the Indian Army’s training system, with a focus on raising training standards, strengthening institutional capabilities, improving physical fitness and promoting sporting excellence as the Army prepares its personnel for future operational challenges.
