Transforming Rural Livelihoods: Himachal’s Dung Purchase Guarantee Brings Prosperity to Farmers
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering the rural economy and improving the livelihoods of farmers and livestock owners, the Himachal Pradesh government has launched the Dung Purchase Guarantee under the “Dung Samriddhi Scheme.” This ambitious program, part of the Chief Minister’s Agricultural Promotion Scheme, ensures the purchase of animal dung at a rate of ₹3 per kg, directly benefiting farmers and livestock keepers.
Empowering Farmers Through Innovation
The state government, under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s leadership, has already made historic strides in supporting milk producers by raising the support price of milk. Now, by monetizing animal dung, the government is taking a unique step to strengthen the rural economy and highlight the importance of livestock.
Farmers are being directly paid for the dung they supply, with payments credited to their bank accounts, ensuring transparency and efficiency. This initiative is also designed to raise awareness about sustainable agricultural practices and the economic potential of livestock management.
First Beneficiaries in Karsog Lead the Way
The scheme has gained traction in the Karsog subdivision of Mandi district, where the Agriculture Department has started purchasing dung. Promila Devi and Radhu Devi, residents of Bhadarnu village in Karsog, are the first beneficiaries of this initiative.
Promila Devi supplied 4.5 quintals of dung, earning ₹1,350, while Radhu Devi sold 3.5 quintals and received ₹1,050. Both expressed gratitude to the state government and Chief Minister Sukhu, praising the program for its innovative approach and direct benefits to livestock owners.
“At first, we couldn’t believe the government was actually purchasing animal dung,” shared Promila Devi. “But once officials from the Agriculture Department explained the scheme, we realized its potential. The money was credited directly to our bank accounts, which has been a huge help.”
A Step Towards Rural Prosperity
Naresh Chandel, in charge of the Agriculture Farm in Karsog, highlighted that the scheme is open to all farmers in the area. “Farmers can now earn additional income by selling cattle dung at a fixed rate. We are also spreading awareness to ensure more people benefit from this initiative,” he said.
A Visionary Approach to Livestock Management
This scheme underscores the state government’s commitment to addressing the needs of rural communities and promoting sustainable practices. By turning a traditionally overlooked resource into an economic opportunity, the Dung Samriddhi Scheme is setting a new benchmark for rural development.
The initiative not only supports farmers financially but also encourages better livestock management, creating a win-win situation for farmers, the environment, and the agricultural economy.
