Himachal’s Healthcare Revolution: A New Era of Hope & Healing

Himachal Pradesh is undergoing a remarkable transformation in its healthcare sector, thanks to Vyavastha Parivartan—a visionary initiative led by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Recognizing that health and education are the cornerstones of a thriving society, the state government is making unprecedented strides in modernizing medical infrastructure and ensuring quality care for all.

A New Dawn for Healthcare in Himachal

Recently, the Chief Minister held detailed discussions with doctors and faculty from leading medical institutions, including:

  • Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College & Hospital, Tanda
  • Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla
  • Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS), Chamiyana

The focus? Assessing staffing needs, upgrading medical technologies, and ensuring world-class healthcare facilities for the people of Himachal.

Robotic Surgery & Cutting-Edge Technology

In a historic first, robotic surgery is being introduced in Himachal Pradesh! The state-of-the-art machines have already arrived at AIMSS, and specialist surgeons will soon be recruited to operate them. This leap forward will bring precision and advanced treatment options closer to home.

Replacing Outdated Equipment

Gone are the days of relying on decades-old MRI and X-ray machines. The government is replacing outdated equipment with high-tech alternatives, matching the standards of premier institutions like AIIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh. A 3 Tesla MRI machine—similar to those used in AIIMS—is among the new acquisitions, ensuring faster, clearer, and more accurate diagnoses.

Boosting Medical Staff & Training

To bridge the healthcare workforce gap, the government has recruited:

  • 185 Medical Officers
  • 130 Staff Nurses
  • 67 Lab Technicians
  • 45 Pharmacist Officers

Additionally, 491 new posts have been created across various healthcare roles.

Recognizing the need for skilled professionals, training seats in medical laboratory, radiology, anesthesia, and OT techniques have been increased—from just 10 to 50 at IGMC Shimla and from 18 to 50 at Tanda Medical College. This ensures more Himachali youth can receive quality education without leaving the state.

Automatic Labs & Enhanced Diagnostics

Three major institutions—IGMC Shimla, Tanda Medical College, and AIMSS Chamiyana—will soon have fully automated labs, with ₹25 crore allocated to each. These labs will speed up testing, reduce human error, and improve patient outcomes.

HIMCARE: Lifeline for the Underprivileged

The HIMCARE scheme has already transformed lives, providing free treatment to over 5.80 lakh people at a cost of ₹810 crore. The scheme prioritizes:

  • Economically weaker sections
  • Orphans
  • Single women & widows
  • Children and other vulnerable groups

To make the process smoother, HIMCARE cards will now be issued quarterly, with medical superintendents empowered to approve urgent cases at any time.

A Healthier, Stronger Himachal

With ₹1,730 crore allocated for modern medical equipment in 2025-26, the state is committed to making healthcare accessible, affordable, and advanced—especially for those in remote areas who previously had to travel outside Himachal for treatment.

Under CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s leadership, Himachal is not just improving healthcare—it’s redefining it. The goal? To become a model state for medical excellence and a preferred destination for health tourism.

This is more than just policy—it’s a promise of hope, healing, and a healthier future for every Himachali.
