From Bricks to Books: How a Mason’s Children Built Their Dreams with Govt Support

Leela Nand’s struggle as a mason could have limited his children’s future—but a helping hand from the Workers Welfare Board changed everything.

In the quiet village of Randaul, nestled in Himachal Pradesh’s Karsog region, Leela Nand spent years laboring as a mason, laying bricks to build homes for others while barely daring to dream of a brighter future for his own children. Higher education seemed like a distant hope—until the Himachal Pradesh Bhavan and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board stepped in, turning his aspirations into reality.

A Father’s Dream, A Government’s Support

Leela Nand registered with the Workers Welfare Board in 2020, never imagining how drastically it would change his family’s fate. The board provided ₹84,000 in financial aid for his children’s education—₹48,000 for his son Sahil’s ITI course in electrician trade and ₹36,000 for his daughter Anjali’s graduation.

Today, Sahil has successfully completed his ITI training from Panthaghati, Shimla, and is now an apprentice at SJVNL (Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited). Meanwhile, Anjali proudly holds a Bachelor’s degree, achieved with the board’s crucial support.

“Without this help, my children would never have been able to study,” Leela Nand admits, his voice thick with emotion. “Seeing them succeed today—it feels like all my struggles were worth it.”

A Lifeline for Laborers’ Families

The Workers Welfare Board extends financial assistance to laborers—masons, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and helpers—ensuring their children aren’t deprived of education due to financial constraints. Under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s leadership, the state government has intensified efforts to uplift workers’ families, ensuring no child’s potential is wasted for lack of resources.

Gratitude and a Brighter Future

Sahil and Anjali, now standing on the threshold of promising careers, express deep gratitude. “This scheme is a blessing for families like ours,” says Anjali, who completed her BA from Degree College Sunni. “We couldn’t have done it without the government’s help.”

Their story isn’t just one family’s triumph—it’s proof that when welfare policies reach the right hands, they don’t just change lives; they build futures.

“This is what true governance looks like,” Leela Nand smiles. “Not just walls of brick, but bridges to a better life.”
