Trailblazer IPS officer Tilottama Verma Bids Farewell After 34 Years of Service
IPS Tilottama Verma, one of the most respected officers of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has retired after a remarkable career spanning more than three decades. Born in Shimla, she carried forward her family’s policing legacy as the daughter of former Himachal Pradesh DGP Rati Ram Verma, and went on to carve her own path as a fearless and reform-driven leader.
Breaking Barriers Early
A 1990-batch officer, Verma’s career was marked by historic firsts. In 2002, she became the first woman IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh to receive the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry. The honour came after a daring operation in Hathras, where she rescued two children while confronting armed criminals — a moment that defined her reputation as a courageous field officer.
Fighting Corruption at the Core
Between 2006 and 2011, Verma served as DIG (Anti-Corruption) in the CBI. Her tenure was remembered for its uncompromising stance against graft, even when senior officials were involved. Colleagues admired her neutrality and commitment to keeping investigations free from political influence.
Championing Wildlife Protection
Her work gained international recognition when she took charge as Inspector General of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau. Under her leadership, several organised trafficking networks were dismantled, including those linked to tiger poaching and cross-border smuggling. For these efforts, she earned global honours such as the prestigious Clark R. Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Award.
Reforming Police Training
In her final role as Director General (Training) at the UP Police Headquarters, Verma spearheaded reforms in training methods. She introduced scientific investigation techniques, behavioural modules, and gender sensitisation programs, strengthening the force’s preparedness for high-pressure events like the 2025 Maha Kumbh.
A Legacy That Inspires
From her roots in Shimla to her leadership on national and international platforms, Verma’s journey has inspired countless young officers — especially women aspiring to join the police. Her career stands as a benchmark of courage, integrity, and vision in institution-building.
As she steps into retirement, IPS Tilottama Verma leaves behind not just a decorated service record, but a legacy that will continue to guide the policing fraternity for years to come.
