Tibetan Women in Exile Keep the Flame of Resistance Alive

On a cold March morning in Dharamsala, the streets of McLeodganj filled with the voices of Tibetan women carrying flags and placards, their chants echoing a struggle that has spanned generations. The Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) and its regional chapters marked the 67th Tibetan Women’s Uprising Day with a peaceful protest, reminding the world of the courage and sacrifices made by women in Tibet’s fight for freedom.

Hundreds of exiled women—students, nuns, and activists—stood shoulder to shoulder, recalling the events of March 1959 when thousands of Tibetan women first united against Chinese military rule. Despite bad weather forcing the cancellation of a planned rally, participants gathered for prayers, speeches, and expressions of solidarity, determined to honor the memory of those who gave their lives.

“Tibetan women stepped forward when many men had already been killed,” said activist Tenzin Minley, highlighting the resilience that has defined the movement. Youdon Aukatsang, a member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, reminded the crowd that the uprising was not just a protest but a turning point in Tibetan history, led by women who refused to be silenced.

The day also carried a message for younger generations. “We have a responsibility to raise awareness and speak up for those inside Tibet who cannot,” said student speaker Tenzin Dasel, pointing to ongoing restrictions on religion, language, and basic freedoms.

The origins of this day trace back to March 12, 1959, when Pamo Kusang led nearly 15,000 women in a peaceful demonstration outside the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Her bravery cost her life a decade later, executed by Chinese authorities, but her legacy endures as a symbol of defiance and unity.

For the women gathered in Dharamsala, the commemoration was not just about remembering the past—it was about carrying forward a struggle that continues to define Tibetan identity. Their voices, rising above the misty hills, were a reminder that the spirit of resistance lives on.
