Teachers’ Day Celebrated at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla
The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, celebrated Teachers’ Day with a special lecture delivered by Professor S. Ranganath, Fellow of the Institute, in the Seminar Room of Rashtrapati Nivas today. The event was chaired by Professor Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi, Director, IIAS, and attended by National Fellows, Tagore Fellows, IUC Associates, Scholars in Residence, Section Heads and employees of the Institute.
In his address, Professor Ranganath reflected on the ideals of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose birthday marks the celebration of Teachers’ Day across India. He emphasized that Radhakrishnan’s vision of education transcended the classroom and was rooted in the principles of truth, service, and the search for universal values. Highlighting the role of the teacher as both guide and moral compass, Professor Ranganath noted that teaching is not merely a profession but a sacred responsibility to nurture humanity’s highest ideals.
He also underlined that in today’s rapidly changing world, the relevance of Dr. Radhakrishnan’s thought is even greater. Teachers, he said, are torchbearers of knowledge who must balance tradition with modernity and instill in students a spirit of inquiry, ethics, and universal brotherhood.
Professor Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi, in his presidential remarks, spoke about the importance of commemorating Teachers’ Day at IIAS, where intellectual heritage and values of higher learning converge. He observed that the Institute, situated in the historic Rashtrapati Nivas and Dr. Radhakrishanan is our founder. It was his noble inspiration that today this institute carry forward a living tradition of fostering scholarly pursuit in the service of society.
The event concluded with expressions of gratitude to all teachers whose dedication continues to shape individuals and society alike.
