Tashigang: A Beacon of Democracy in the Himalayas
Nestled amidst the towering Himalayas lies Tashigang, a remarkable locale where democracy prevails despite daunting challenges. Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 15,256 feet above sea level, Tashigang boasts the distinction of being the highest polling station globally. During the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, Tashigang once again took center stage, exemplifying the unwavering embrace of democracy by its inhabitants.
The Election Commission of India’s decision to designate Tashigang as the world’s highest polling booth garnered significant attention, with 52 individuals slated to cast their votes on June 1st. Spearheading efforts to engage the local populace in the electoral process, Harsh Negi, an assistant election officer, tirelessly worked in the Spiti Valley. Even former daily wage workers and their families enthusiastically participated, underscoring their commitment to the electoral exercise.
Despite facing formidable conditions in Lahaul Spiti district’s cold desert, the residents of Tashigang exhibit remarkable resilience, ensuring a commendable 100 percent voter turnout with each election cycle. The symbolic transition from Hikkim to Tashigang as the highest polling station in 2019 underscored the region’s steadfast dedication to democracy.
With each successive election, the number of registered voters in Tashigang continues to swell, serving as a testament to their unwavering dedication to democratic principles amid adversities. From a mere 45 voters in 2019, the count has surged to 52 in anticipation of the upcoming 2024 election.
While Tashigang shines as a beacon of democracy, it is not the sole significant electoral battleground in Himachal Pradesh. The expansive Mandi Parliamentary constituency, second only to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, is characterized by fierce competition, featuring prominent figures such as Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and Vikramaditya from the Rampurbushair royal family.
However, amidst the electoral fervor, there is also a somber note. The passing of Shyam Saran Negi, India’s oldest voter, in November 2022, shortly after participating in the Vidhan Sabha elections, serves as a poignant reminder of the individual’s crucial role in democracy.
As Himachal Pradesh gears up for the 2024 election, the narratives of Tashigang, Mandi, and its resilient populace underscore the enduring strength of democracy. Even amid the harsh environs of the Himalayas, democracy thrives, illuminating the path forward for future generations.
