Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s journey from low official background to CM post
Newly elected Chief Minister and Himachal Pradesh Congress Vidhayak Dal leader made his journey from very low official background to Chief minister post in the state. Mr Sukhu was born on March 27 , 1964 from HRTC driver Rasil Singh at Nadaun area of Hamirpur district. He did M.A and LLB from Himachal Pradesh Uniersity and remained state president of NSUI (1989-1995) and Youth Congress( president (1992-1998). He became a member of AICC in 1998 and was elected four time for state assembly from 2003 to 07, 2012-2017 and 2017-2022 and 2022 for the present term. He belonged to Village Bhavarna of Nadaun in Hamipur district. He made his debut in the electoral politics right from NSUI students as he was elected SCA president at Government Degree College Sanjouli during his college life from 1981 to 1985. He was elected as Shimla Municipal Corporation councilor from 1988 to 1998 twice from Chhota Shimla ward. However in university politics he could not make progress in electoral politics however he always remained political detractors of six Time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and he could dare Mr Singh to see eye to eye. He was a close-aide of former Union Telecommunication Minister Pandit Sukh Ram and he supported his claim for the post of Chief Minister from Mandi district. He was elevated to Party state president in 2012 and remained in the party office for two and half terms till 2018. He succeeded to bring the decreasing graph of party leadership by uniting all old Congressman; however, the party lost 2017 assembly elections to BJP under the leadership of Virbhadra Singh. He has had a clean image in public life since the day of his student politics and he was known for high moralistic and upright and could speak truth. No other HPCC chief other than Sukhu could openly rebelled against six time Chief Minister Virbadra Singh and could dare to go head on against the decisions of Congress mascot including HPCC chief like Satmahajan, Vipalv Thakur, Vidhaya Stokes, Kuldeep Kumar, Kaul Singh Thakur and Kuldeep Rathore. Fourth Time MLA known for organisation skill being the chief of many party fronts right from NUSI to HPCC chief. He lost one assembly election in 2007-2012 as undercutting from the rival party camps spell doom to his political career. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu succeeded to get the maximum number of tickets in the 2022 elections and reportedly 22 out of total 40 supported his candidature for the CM post in the party. The journey of Mr Sukhu belonged form very low income strat also forced to sell Milk at Brokhost in society vendors for many years. Like Jai Ram Thakur he was commner Mr Thakur was son of massion and Mr Sukhu was also self made as he would be known as son of HRTC bus driver. Mr Sukhu’s rarely calibre and deep penetration in the Congress party made his political journey from step to step to achieve this rare high political profile. Mr Sukhu experience in the public life also helped him to come parallel to the Congress and BJP stalwarts like Prem Kumar Dhumal, Vidhay Stokes, Asha Kumari ,Kaul Singh Thakur, Ram Lal Thakur and Shanta Kumar. He enjoyed high rappart in the AICC for his longest sint in the HPCC, Youth Congress and NSUI.
