Snowfall Shuts Key Himalayan Highways as Himachal Braces for More Stormy Weather
A fresh blanket of snow in Lahaul-Spiti has brought travel to a standstill on two vital mountain highways, leaving locals and tourists navigating a mix of closures and caution. The scenic but treacherous Koksar–Palchan stretch via Rohtang Pass and the Koksar–Lossar route through Kunzum Top were shut down midday Sunday due to snowfall and poor visibility, according to Lahaul-Spiti Police.
Despite the closures, some lifelines remain open—routes like Darcha–Sarchu–Leh and Keylong–Atal Tunnel–Manali are still accessible, though authorities are urging drivers to be extra careful amid slippery roads and foggy conditions.
The weather drama doesn’t end there. Himachal Pradesh saw widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with Bilaspur’s Olinda and Brahmani topping the charts at 30 mm. Thunderstorms swept through hill stations like Kufri and Shimla, bringing gusty winds that peaked at 61 km/h in Reckong Peo.
Looking ahead, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla warns of a brewing cyclonic system over the western Himalayas. This could mean more rain for the mid and lower hills, and fresh snow for the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Chamba over the next two days.
As the region transitions from monsoon to winter, the IMD advises everyone—especially travelers—to stay tuned to official updates. In the mountains, the weather can change in a heartbeat.
