Snow Forecast Sparks Tourist Rush in Kullu-Manali Ahead of Christmas and New Year

With the Meteorological Department predicting snowfall in Himachal Pradesh on December 20 and 21, excitement is building across Kullu-Manali’s tourist hotspots. Visitors are already pouring in, hoping for a “White Christmas” and a snowy New Year celebration.

Manali is seeing a surge of more than 1,000 tourist vehicles daily from outside states, while nearby destinations like Kokser and Gramphu in Lahaul Valley are also drawing crowds. The Atal Tunnel has become a popular route, though traffic jams have been reported as tourists flock to snow points.

Local tourism operators say timely snowfall will be a boon for the economy. “Snowfall is essential for the winter season. Tourists want to celebrate New Year amidst snow, and we are ready for it,” said Gajendra Thakur, President of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association.

Beyond festive celebrations, many visitors are escaping rising pollution in Delhi and other states, choosing the clean mountain air of Kullu and Manikaran Valley. Despite poor road conditions in some areas, bookings are rising fast. Hotel occupancy has already jumped from 30% to 60% and is expected to touch 90% during Christmas and New Year.

Tourism businessman noted that in the absence of nearby snow, tourists are traveling long distances to Shinkula Pass, increasing costs and travel time. “If Manali gets snowfall, it will be a huge relief for visitors,” he said.

Farmers and orchardists are also waiting eagerly, as the dry spell since October has hurt agriculture. The forecasted snowfall could revive not just tourism but also farming and horticulture in the valley.
