SJPNL urges boiling and filtering of water for Shimla residents during Monsoon

As the monsoon season arrives, Shimla Jal Prabhandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has issued a crucial advisory regarding water supply in Shimla. With increased risks of waterborne diseases like jaundice and cholera during this period, SJPNL emphasizes the importance of consuming only boiled or filtered water.

The advisory highlights that turbidity in water sources significantly rises during the rainy season. Although turbidity itself doesn’t directly affect health, it can hinder disinfection processes, allowing harmful microbes—such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites—to thrive. As a precaution, SJPNL recommends boiling water for at least 10 minutes before consumption.

Due to heavy rainfall and subsequent silt accumulation in storage tanks and water sources, regular water supply may become contaminated. SJPNL assures the public that necessary precautions are being taken. However, residents are urged to personally filter and boil their water due to the volume of supply and treatment challenges.

Until silt levels subside, extra care is essential to prevent waterborne diseases. SJPNL’s advisory reminds Shimla residents to be vigilant about water consumption during the monsoon. By following these guidelines, the community can safeguard health and safety.

This advisory, issued in the public interest, emphasizes collective responsibility for safe water practices during this critical period. Shimla MC supplies approximately 48 to 50 MLD water daily to the entire town and nearby Panchayats.
