Sips of Change: Kangra Celebrates Tea’s Power to Transform Lives on International Tea Day
The serene hills of Palampur came alive with the aroma of celebration as the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT) marked International Tea Day under the theme “Tea for Better Lives.” The event honored tea not just as a beverage, but as a symbol of livelihood, sustainability, and wellness.
The celebration was graced by Shri BBL Butail, former Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and a respected tea cultivator. With heartfelt pride, he spoke about tea’s deep roots in Kangra’s economy and identity, and how the region’s tea has earned national and global recognition through GI and PGI tags. He applauded CSIR-IHBT’s pivotal role in breathing new life into the Kangra tea industry.
Adding a personal flavor to the event, Mr. Rajiv Sood, founder of the popular brand Himalayan Brew, shared his entrepreneurial journey. He credited the institute’s scientific guidance for helping him turn a local dream into a thriving brand.
Mr. Hemraj Agarwal, Factory Advisor at the Tea Board of India, offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of tea—its varieties, flavors, and the delicate craft behind every perfect cup.
Earlier, Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, welcomed guests and highlighted the institute’s extensive work in tea research—from germplasm conservation and variety development to farm mechanization and product innovation. He proudly noted the institute’s instrumental role in securing the GI tag for Kangra tea.
A special moment of recognition was reserved for Dr. R.K. Sud, former Chief Scientist, who was honored for his lifelong dedication to promoting and uplifting the tea sector.
The day also featured interactive sessions with scientists, industry experts, and stakeholders, along with live demonstrations of innovative tea-based products developed by the institute—showcasing how tradition and technology can blend beautifully in every cup.
