Shimla’s Water Company Cracks Down on Big Defaulters

The Shimla Water Management Company has decided to get tough on those ignoring their water bills. After years of reminders and temporary measures, the company has now launched a direct disconnection drive against major defaulters — a list that surprisingly includes government offices, hospitals, schools, and colleges.

Why the Crackdown?

  • Earlier, 453 defaulters were served notices, but most failed to clear dues.
  • The city is staring at nearly ₹30 crore in unpaid water bills.
  • More than 3,000 consumers had already received recovery notices in previous phases.
  • With legal advice in hand, the company is now issuing final seven-day notices before cutting supply on the spot.

Who’s Targeted First

  • The first phase focuses on consumers with outstanding bills above ₹1 lakh.
  • Both private households and government institutions are on the radar.
  • Junior engineers will carry out field disconnections if dues remain unpaid.

From Warnings to Action

Until now, the company used to plug connections temporarily, giving defaulters time to pay. But repeated non-compliance and mounting arrears have forced management to adopt direct disconnection as the only way forward.

The Bigger Picture

Officials say strict enforcement is essential to recover dues and ensure uninterrupted water services for Shimla residents. The move sends a clear message: water is a basic necessity, but it comes with responsibility — and ignoring bills will no longer be tolerated.
