Shimla Wakes to a Winter Wonderland: First Snowfall in a Year Brings Joy to Tourists and Farmers

After a long and anxious wait, the hills of Himachal Pradesh have finally been draped in a beautiful white blanket. The capital, Shimla, witnessed its first snowfall this winter, ending a dry spell that had lasted nearly three months.

This snowfall is particularly special, arriving exactly a year after the city’s last significant snow and following a period of severe dryness. Since October 2025, Shimla had recorded virtually no precipitation, with rainfall deficits in November and December hovering around a staggering 99%. The transformation this morning was a welcome sight for many.

For farmers, orchard owners, and residents concerned about depleting groundwater, the snow brings hope and celebration. It promises much-needed moisture for the land and a recharge for water sources.

However, the winter charm also brings familiar disruptions. Several roads have been closed due to accumulating snow. Officials have reported that the main road connecting Chopal and Deha is shut for all traffic after about half a foot of snow accumulated near Chambi. Similar conditions have been reported in higher areas like Sarahan, Taklech, Nankhari, Rampur, and Narkanda.

The snowfall has also impacted daily life, with power supply disruptions in the Chopal subdivision, though water supply remains unaffected for now. Authorities have advised people to avoid travel on affected routes and have stated that road clearance will begin once the weather improves.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this activity, driven by a western disturbance, is expected to continue for the next day or two. Light to moderate snowfall is likely in higher altitudes, while mid-hill regions may see intermittent rain and snow.

As the city embraces this picturesque yet challenging weather, the community balances its joy with caution, awaiting official data on the total snowfall while navigating the temporary hurdles it brings.
