Shimla to Get Safer Drinking Water with First-Ever Ozone Treatment

Residents of Shimla can look forward to cleaner, safer drinking water as the Shimla Jal Prabhandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has approved the use of ozone technology in its upcoming bulk water supply project from the Sutlej. This marks the first time the state will deploy ozone-based disinfection, a modern method aimed at reducing contamination and ensuring healthier water for the city and its surrounding areas.

Why Ozone Matters

  • Traditional chlorination, while effective, carries potential carcinogenic risks.
  • Ozone treatment—known as ozonation—generates gas on-site and infuses it into water.
  • It swiftly neutralizes bacteria and viruses, while breaking down organic pollutants, foul odours, and minerals like iron and manganese.

A Step Toward Modern Water Safety

SJPNL officials described ozone technology as an advanced solution already tested successfully in other parts of India. A study conducted by Tata recommended its adoption, leading the Board of Directors to greenlight the project.

What It Means for Shimla

For a city that has long struggled with water quality issues, this move signals a new era of safer, contamination-free drinking water. It’s not just about infrastructure—it’s about protecting public health and giving residents confidence in the water they consume daily.
