Shimla shines as tourist paradise: Over 60,000 vehicles enter the town

Shimla, the beloved “Queen of Hills,” once again proved why it remains a top travel destination, welcoming an overwhelming surge of over 60,000 tourist vehicles in just four days (June 20–23, 2025) during the extended weekend rush. According to Shimla Police, this staggering number doesn’t even include local traffic, which flowed alongside the tourist wave.

Seamless Traffic Management Amidst the Rush

Facing this massive influx, Himachal Pradesh Police stepped up with a well-executed plan, ensuring smooth movement across the city. A dedicated team of 189 traffic police personnel, backed by 85 additional officers, worked tirelessly at key junctions and high-traffic zones to prevent gridlocks.

Despite the record-breaking footfall, disruptions were minimal. Quick-response teams, including 25 Traffic Motorcycle Riders and strategically placed tow cranes, efficiently handled 11 minor accidents and breakdowns, keeping traffic flowing without major delays.

Exams Amidst the Chaos: A Balancing Act

Adding to the challenge, Shimla also hosted the JOA (IT) Examination across 13 centers, with 4,305 candidates appearing. To ensure smooth conduct, 140 extra police personnel were deployed for security and crowd control.

Thanks to meticulous planning, most candidates reached on time. However, around 30 examinees arrived late and were denied entry post the 10:30 AM cutoff, as per standard rules.

Police Clarify: “No Chaos, Just Coordinated Efforts”

Responding to some media reports exaggerating traffic chaos, Shimla Police emphasized that the situation was effectively managed and urged journalists to verify facts before reporting.

“Our teams worked round-the-clock to ensure smooth traffic and timely access for exam candidates, even during this unprecedented rush,” said a senior police official.

A Call for Cooperation

Shimla Police also requested tourists and media to support their efforts by following guidelines and relying on official updates for accurate information.

This successful handling of dual challenges—a tourist boom and critical exams—showcases Shimla’s growing appeal and the efficiency of its administration during peak seasons. The city continues to charm visitors while maintaining order, proving why it remains the crown jewel of Himalayan getaways.
