Shimla–Shalaghat Highway Gets a Fresh Start: New Survey to Redraw Route

Travel between Shimla and Lower Himachal could soon become smoother, as the long-awaited Shimla–Shalaghat four-lane highway project is being given a new lease of life. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will begin a fresh survey in March to redraw the 27-kilometre stretch and prepare a new Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Originally planned nearly four years ago as a two-lane road, the alignment is now being revised to suit a modern four-lane highway under the larger Shimla–Mataur plan. Officials say this upgrade will not only ease traffic but also connect more villages along the way.

The proposed route may pass through Shimla Rural areas, including Jathiadevi — where the state government envisions developing a new township. Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh has already hinted at linking nearby villages to the highway, ensuring better connectivity for residents.

While the exact alignment will only be clear after the survey, NHAI has assured that efforts will be made to minimize disruption to populated areas. If all goes as planned, construction could begin by the end of this year, marking a significant step toward improved infrastructure in the region.
