Shimla Residents Invited to Join Hands for Smoother, Safer Traffic
To tackle growing traffic jams and make roads safer—especially in busy places like Shimla—the Himachal Pradesh Police has rolled out a new Traffic Volunteer Scheme. This initiative encourages everyday citizens to step up and help manage traffic, easing the load on police officers during rush hours, festivals, and major events.
Shimla’s narrow roads and rising number of vehicles often lead to long traffic jams, particularly during tourist season and office hours. Officials believe that with local residents pitching in, congestion at key points can be reduced, traffic can flow more smoothly, and pedestrians—especially school children—can be better protected.
How does it work?
Volunteers will work alongside the police to regulate traffic, help children cross roads safely, and spread awareness about road safety. They’ll also be called upon during big gatherings when traffic is at its worst.
Anyone aged 16 or older, who is physically fit, mentally sound, and a permanent resident of the area, can apply—provided they have a clean record. Volunteers will serve up to four hours a day (two in the morning, two in the evening) and will receive an honorarium of ₹40 per hour, up to ₹4,000 per month.
A police official emphasized that even a small contribution of time from citizens can make a big difference, helping keep hundreds of people safe and reducing the risk of accidents. “We urge everyone to join in and make this road safety campaign a real success,” he said.
Authorities are hopeful that this community-driven approach will help untangle traffic snarls and make roads safer for everyone—residents and tourists alike.
