Shimla Gets a Mobility Boost: New Lift and Urban Development Projects Unveiled

In a significant step toward enhancing accessibility in Shimla, Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh inaugurated a new lift connecting Middle Bazaar to Mall Road on Monday. Built under the Smart City Mission, the facility is designed to benefit senior citizens, tourists, and local businesses, while also boosting the city’s tourism appeal.

Constructed at a cost of ₹1.77 crore, the lift features a 24-meter tower and a 24-meter-long footbridge, accommodating up to eight passengers at a time. Tickets are priced affordably at ₹10. The lift, operated and maintained by the Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC) for the next five years, is expected to streamline connectivity in the bustling hill station.

During the inauguration, Singh highlighted the state government’s broader vision for urban development in Shimla. He announced ambitious plans for a multi-story steel-structured parking facility at Jakhu Temple, along with additional parking projects near Vikas Nagar, SDA Complex, Auckland, and IGMC Cancer Hospital, collectively accommodating up to 2,000 vehicles.

To address traffic congestion, Singh outlined the government’s initiatives, including expanding Cart Road and exploring bypass connections. A ₹1,600 crore ropeway system is also in the works to connect key city locations, reduce congestion, and support the tourism industry. Furthermore, plans to organize utility cables through underground ducting from Chhota Shimla to Mall Road aim to enhance the city’s aesthetics and efficiency.

Municipal Corporation Mayor Surendra Chauhan added details about complementary projects, such as new lifts connecting Lakkar Bazaar to Ridge and Auckland to Lakkar Bazaar, and the development of a Waste to Wonder Park at Lakkar Bazaar. A mini-mall at Sabzi Mandi, featuring Municipal Corporation offices, senior citizen facilities, and cultural shops, has also been proposed.

“This lift is a step toward making Shimla more accessible and modern,” Singh remarked, urging citizens to support efforts to maintain the city’s cleanliness and heritage charm.

The new lift and upcoming projects signal a transformative phase for Shimla, blending its historic allure with modern infrastructure to enhance mobility, convenience, and tourism.
