Road Collapse in Chalonthi: Investigation Underway to Reopen Route

In Shimla’s Chalonthi area near Sanjauli, life has been thrown into chaos after the collapse of a road above an under‑construction tunnel. What began as small cracks has now turned into gaping holes, forcing authorities to shut the road and leaving residents anxious about their safety.

On Friday, a technical investigation team arrived with modern sensing equipment to study the ground beneath the road. Their findings will determine when the route can reopen, but until then, traffic jams have paralyzed the city—short commutes now stretch into hours as vehicles are diverted through Sanjauli market.

The crisis isn’t limited to the road. Houses built above the affected stretch have developed cracks, and locals fear that heavy rain could worsen the situation. The investigation team will inspect these homes and the tunnel’s upper levels to assess risks.

For residents, the uncertainty is unbearable. “Every day the situation gets worse,” locals say, pointing to how cracks have turned into craters. With the area’s stability in question, people are living in fear, waiting for clarity on whether their homes and roads are safe.
