Renowned Music Maestro Som Dutt Battu Honored with Padma Shri Award for Outstanding Contributions in Arts

In recognition of his distinguished contributions to the realm of arts, music maestro Som Dutt Battu, aged 86 and hailing from Shimla, has been selected for the prestigious Padma Shri Award. Known for making a significant impact in folk music and classical singing, both nationally and internationally, Battu’s accomplishments have garnered him this esteemed accolade.

The Government of India recently announced the Padma Awards for 2024, which represent the country’s second-highest civilian honors. Among the 132 individuals chosen for the Padma Shri Award, Som Dutt Battu stands as the sole representative from Himachal Pradesh, receiving this honor in acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions. His notable work in the realms of Himachali folk music and classical music has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

In addition to the Padma Shri Award, Som Dutt Battu has previously been recognized with the ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Award’ for his significant contributions to drama, dance, music, and singing. Hailing from the Patiala Gharana, Battu, a resident of Hori (Byoliya) village in Shimla, was born on July 5, 1937, in Jasur, Kangra district. His father, Pt. Ram Lal Battu, was an artist associated with the renowned Shyam Chaurasi Gharana.

Battu’s musical journey has been adorned with several accolades, including the ‘Himachal Gaurav,’ ‘Punjab Sangeet Ratna Award,’ ‘Life Time Achievement Award,’ and the Dr. Jaswant Singh Award, highlighting the profound impact of his artistry in the field of music.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated Som Datt Battu for being selected for the Padma Shri award as approved by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for rendering distinguished services in the field of promoting Art.  Shimla based vocalist Som Datt Battu will receive the Padam Shri Award for his exceptional contribution for promoting classical music.
