Rain Keeps Himachal on the Edge : Yellow Alert Issued, Roads Reopen Amid Landslides
The monsoon continues to batter Himachal Pradesh, and the skies aren’t clearing up just yet. With heavy rains showing no signs of letting up, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for several districts, warning of intense showers over the next 48 hours.
What to Expect in the Coming Days
Due to continuous downpours, life in many parts of the state has been thrown off balance. Light snowfall on the higher peaks has added a chill to the air, making the weather cooler than usual. The yellow alert remains in effect until August 26, with light to moderate rain expected from August 27 to 29.
Here’s a quick look at the district-wise forecast:
- August 25 (Monday): Heavy rain expected in Shimla and Sirmaur. Other districts may see light showers.
- August 26 (Tuesday): Una and Mandi are under yellow alert for heavy rain. Light to moderate rain likely elsewhere.
Temperature Trends
The weather department predicts a 2–3°C drop in maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual decline over the next few days. Minimum temperatures, however, are expected to remain stable.
Chandigarh–Manali Highway Reopens After Landslides
In a bit of good news, the Chandigarh–Manali National Highway was reopened for traffic at 10 AM on Sunday, August 24. Landslides between Pandoh and Aut had blocked the road on Saturday night, but swift action by NHAI and the Public Works Department helped clear the debris early Sunday morning.
Currently, vehicles traveling between Kullu and Mandi are being allowed through under police supervision.
Traffic Still Crawling in Landslide-Hit Areas
Despite the reopening, traffic remains slow. The highway has sunk in places, and only one side is operational, causing long queues and delays. Drivers are facing a tough time navigating the stretch. Meanwhile, the alternative route via Kataula remains closed near Kannauj, adding to the travel woes.
