New Bridges on Manali–Leh Highway Promise Safer Journeys and Stronger Security

Travel on the high-altitude Manali–Leh highway just got smoother and safer. On Sunday, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) inaugurated four new bridges, a major boost to connectivity in one of India’s most challenging terrains. Built under Project Deepak at a cost of ₹18 crore, these structures are designed to withstand harsh weather and ensure the uninterrupted movement of heavy army vehicles, while also making life easier for tourists.

The newly opened bridges include the 70-metre Shogtong Bridge, two multi-cell box bridges at Zingzingbar, and the 60-metre Unam Bridge at Keylong Sarai. Together, they strengthen a route that has long been vulnerable to avalanches, overflowing streams, and unpaved stretches.

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut welcomed the development, calling Himachal’s roads the “lifeline of the state.” She praised the central government for prioritising infrastructure upgrades despite the region’s difficult geography. “These bridges will become a strong foundation for long-term progress,” she said, thanking Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their continued focus on Himachal’s growth.

The inauguration was part of a larger effort, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh dedicating 125 infrastructure projects nationwide from Leh. For the Manali–Leh route, officials believe the upgraded bridges will not only support the defence forces but also give tourism a significant push.

For locals, soldiers, and travellers alike, these bridges represent more than just concrete and steel—they are a promise of safer journeys, stronger security, and steady progress for Himachal Pradesh.
