Mothers to Lead the Fight Against Drug Abuse: HGVS
Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, in collaboration with various organizations such as YWCA, HPMRA, Progressive Pensioners Association, and Himachal Kisan Sabha, organized International Women’s Day on March 8. The event saw participation from committee members, current and former representatives of panchayats, and members of different organizations from Tutu and Mashobra blocks.
Pamphlets were distributed during the event, highlighting the crucial role of mothers and urging them to become the driving force in the fight against drug abuse. Following a gathering near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shimla, a discussion was held at YWCA.
Dr. Om Prakash Bhureta, National General Secretary of the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle this issue. He stated that not just Himachal, but neighboring states must come together for a joint campaign to curb drug trafficking. He stressed the importance of bridging the generation gap and improving communication with children to understand the root causes behind drug use and trafficking.
Govind Chatranata, President of the Urban Unit, expressed concerns over the younger generation’s vulnerability to drug abuse, stating that while governments talk about development, the youth are heading toward destruction. He highlighted that even if one family can be saved from the deadly trap of drugs, it would be a significant contribution.
YWCA General Secretary Rohini Singh announced that all women’s courses at their institution would include special sessions focused on combating drug abuse, assuring full support for the campaign.
University students Devdutt and Kamal Kishore also participated in the discussion, voicing their concerns about youth involvement in drug addiction.
Former panchayat heads Heera Nand Shandilya and Leela Sharma, along with District President of the Samiti, Jiyanand Sharma, District Secretary Sumitra Chandel, and Kusumpati Kisan Sabha Secretary Jaishiv Singh Thakur, also shared their views on the issue.
