Monsoon Fury Strikes Shimla: Building Collapse, Road Tragedy, and Cloudburst Underscore Growing Risks

In a narrow escape from disaster, a multistory building in Mathu Colony near Shimla collapsed early this morning. Fortunately, no lives were lost, as the structure—owned by Smt. Ranjna Verma—was unoccupied at the time. Locals had noticed cracks forming recently, and while the exact cause is still under investigation, the incident highlights the mounting pressure on Shimla’s fragile infrastructure amid relentless monsoon rains.

Elsewhere, tragedy struck near Jalog, where a vehicle carrying five passengers skidded off a rain-slicked road and plunged into a gorge. Three people lost their lives, and one remains missing. Rescue operations are ongoing.

Adding to the region’s woes, a cloudburst hit Sikaseri village in Tehsil Rampur late last night. While no casualties were reported, the flash flood damaged local paths and disrupted minor infrastructure.

These incidents are part of a broader pattern of destruction across Himachal Pradesh this monsoon season. Since June 20, the state has recorded 42 deaths—20 due to weather-related events and 22 from road accidents. Financial losses have soared past ₹75 crore, with roads, electricity, and water supply systems bearing the brunt. As of June 29, 129 roads remain blocked, 612 transformers are down, and six water supply schemes are non-functional.

Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant, avoid unstable slopes, and steer clear of poorly constructed buildings as heavy rains continue to lash the region.
