Maa Mujhe Tagore Bana De’: A Moving Tribute to Teachers, Dreams, and Determination

The heart-touching solo play ‘Maa Mujhe Tagore Bana De’, performed by renowned theatre artist Lucky Gupta, captivated students and faculty alike at Auckland House School for Boys with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring message. The one-hour solo performance not only celebrated the timeless bond between student and teacher but also reignited essential human values among children, especially the value of gratitude.

Adapted from a Punjabi story by the late Mohan Bhandari, the play narrates the inspiring journey of a young village boy from a labourer’s family who, despite poverty and personal tragedy, overcomes all odds to pursue his education. Nicknamed ‘Little Tagore’ by his teacher for his poetic talent, the boy is forced to drop out of school after his father’s sudden death and his mother’s illness. However, motivated by his teacher’s enduring words—“Never give up in life”—he retakes his exams, tops the state, and eventually returns as a teacher to uplift other disadvantaged students.

The performance stood out for its interactive format, where Lucky Gupta involved students directly in various scenes, bringing multiple characters to life without any elaborate sets or special effects. This immersive approach created a raw, emotional, and educational experience, leaving a deep impression on young minds. At its core, the play reminded students of the importance of gratitude—towards parents, teachers, and society—and the enduring power of perseverance.

Lucky Gupta, a seasoned theatre artist who began his journey in Jammu in 2000, has performed over 50 plays and conducted more than 100 children’s workshops. ‘Maa Mujhe Tagore Bana De’ has become his signature performance, taking him to more than 1,000 towns and cities across 28 states, reaching over 5 million viewers—all through self-funding and audience support. The performance at Auckland House School for Boys was not just a cultural event—it was a lesson in empathy, gratitude, and resilience, inspiring students to dream big and value the unseen efforts of those who guide them.
