Last Call for Borewell Registration: Himachal Warns Industries to Comply or Face Shutdown

In a decisive move to protect its dwindling groundwater reserves, the Himachal Pradesh government has issued a final warning to industries and commercial establishments: register your borewells and tubewells by June 30—or risk having them sealed.

The Jal Shakti Department has made it mandatory for all groundwater users to upload their borewell details on official portals. This directive falls under the State Ground Water (Regulation and Development and Management Control) Amendment Act, 2022, and aims to bring unregulated water extraction under control.

Officials have emphasized that this is the last opportunity for industries to comply. After June 30, the registration portals—emerginghimachal.hp.gov.in and jsv.hp.nic.in—will be deactivated, and late applications will not be accepted.

“If industries fail to register, their borewells and tubewells will be treated as illegal. Strict action will follow, including sealing of the installations,” a Jal Shakti Department official stated.

The department currently lacks accurate data on the number of borewells operating across the state. Many were installed without proper reporting, leading to unchecked extraction of thousands of litres of groundwater daily—especially during the dry summer months.

This registration drive is not just about compliance—it’s about sustainable water management. Groundwater is a shared resource, and the government is determined to ensure it is not exploited for profit without oversight.

“This is about protecting a public resource. We cannot allow groundwater to be misused,” the official added.

Once the deadline passes, enforcement teams will begin inspections. Any unregistered borewell or tubewell will be considered illegal and shut down without further notice.
